Designing a boat for sailing the Atlantic Credit: Wrocław University of Technology Facebook

Generally speaking, tech students like to take on difficult projects because it not only looks good on their resume, but also because they often get their name checked on social media.

Polish students hope to become the second group to create an unmanned boat to cross the Atlantic Ocean

About seven students from Poland’s Wrocław University of Technology have taken on the challenge of building an unmanned robotic boat to cross the Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean Sea as part of the Microtransat Challenge.

This challenge was created in 2005, during which time SB Met, built in Norway in 2018, managed to meet this challenge with just one vessel. transatlantic journey No passengers on board for 79 days from Newfoundland to Ireland.

There were two categories of participants: autonomous, which does not allow for human interaction with the boat, and robotics, which can send different types of data to the boat; Selected option.

Polish student may have to spend up to 50,000 euros to build an unmanned boat for transatlantic crossings

It is not a cheap challenge, with costs so far reaching around 20,000 euros. If all goes well and the boat passes initial tests on the Oder River in March, all systems will be put into production in the final version. The cost is 50,000 euros.

The boat is about 1 meter long. renewable energy Sources say the team hopes to cover the entire route when it sets out in November this year, but their initial goal is to cover at least 1,000 kilometers, and if they achieve this they will consider it a success.

The team is in no way aiming to break the 79-day record set by SB Met, and estimates that assuming the boat makes it all the way, it could take 60 to 150 days depending on weather conditions. There is.

The seven students, all trained in robotics and also have sailing experience, are teaming up with the PWr Solar Boat Team, which specializes in building this type of vessel.
